14 Drivers Report Suspected DUI on I-5

On New Year's Day, a suspected drunk driver's erratic driving led to 14 different calls to 911, reports NWCN.com.

Along a 10-mile stretch of Interstate 5 shortly before noon, several drivers reported fearing for their lives as a 32-year-old driver from Auburn weaved in and out of traffic. The suspect was reportedly driving a Dodge Durango and traveled at inconsistent speeds as he struck the center divider several times and nearly hit several vehicles.

The bad driving was first noticed along I-5 at Gravelly Lake. The driver was said to be out of the lanes, in the lanes, speeding up, and slowing down all at the same time. A concerned Washington State Trooper described the driver as like a stray bullet, ready to hit and injure someone at any time.

The driver traveled south along I-5 before getting off at the Nisqually exit. He then quickly got back on the highway, only this time going northbound. Eventually, the unidentified driver crashed his SUV near the Bridgeport Way exit. Instead of stopping the wild ride, witnesses tell police that the man then tried to leave the scene by running through oncoming traffic. The man apparently tried to hop a fence on foot and ran into an apartment building in Lakewood. Police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect for drunk driving, hit and run, and driving with a suspended license.

The suspect's arrest in Pierce County followed 16 drunk driving arrests on New Year's Eve in Pierce and Thurston Counties. The New Year's holiday is notoriously linked to drunk driving and the Washington State Patrol had stepped up its DUI patrols.
