Dog Owner Loses Dog After DUI Arrest

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Mar 04, 2013 | 0 Comments

We've written a lot about the different penalties for a drunk driving conviction in Washington.

These can include mandatory minimum jail sentences, monetary fines, losing your driver's license, and even having to pay to install an ignition interlock device into your car.

However, we rarely ever talk about the non-statutory penalties, like how a DUI arrest can strain your family life or even affect your ability to hold a job.

Recently, DUI suspect Juan Crespo learned first hand some of these penalties as his dog was taken away from him as a result of his arrest and pending criminal trial.

Crespo was observed changing lanes without signaling near Seattle, when he was pulled over by a police officer, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. After running Crespo's name through the computer, the officer discovered that the suspect was wanted on a felony burglar charge in California.

As Crespo was held by authorities and waiting a possibly very long criminal process, authorities had to figure out what to do with his German Shepherd who was in Crespo's vehicle at the time.

Fortunately for Crespo, the arresting officer was a dog lover and went above and beyond the normal call of duty by actively looking for a home for the dog. If not for the work of this officer, it's very possible that the dog would have been taken to a shelter and possibly euthanized.

It's rare to hear a non-legal story regarding a Seattle DUI arrest. Juan Crespo's case should be a reminder to everyone that a DUI conviction can result in a lot more than jail time and fines.

A DUI arrest and your subsequent defense can be an extremely difficult time. You should consider working with experienced DUI defense attorneys so that they can handle the legal process, while you take care of personal matters at home.
