DUI Blamed for Bainbridge Island Crash

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Dec 22, 2013 | 0 Comments

A three-car accident that occurred at the Agate Pass Bridge in Bainbridge Island may have been due to a drunk driver, reports the Bainbridge Island Review.

Authorities say that 32-year-old Andrew Page Smith of Poulsbo was drunk when he lost control of his Ford F250 pickup truck on Highway 305 and struck a box van. Smith then allegedly kept driving when he crossed the center line and struck a Saturn sedan head-on while on the bridge. The accident occurred just before 8:00 AM on Monday and both Smith and the driver of the Saturn were injured.

Smith has been charged with a DUI and was booked to Kitsap County Jail. Prosecutors also charged him with vehicular assault.

The penalties for a DUI in Washington are severe. Some common penalties include jail time, monetary fines, a requirement to install an ignition interlock device, and attendance at rehabilitation programs. In some cases, the penalties for drunk driving can be enhanced even further such as in the following instances:

  • Accident that leads to property damage or injury
  • History of drunk driving convictions
  • Egregious conditions such as driving recklessly or speeding
  • Carrying minors at the time of the accident
  • Having an excessive blood alcohol level

Washington drunk driving laws are some of the toughest in the country.
