How Many Drinks Can You Have Before Getting Drunk?

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Dec 26, 2012 | 0 Comments

New Year's Eve is only a few days away and you may be getting ready for the revelries.

In fact, you may have even checked out one of several online blood alcohol calculators or apps that would supposedly measure how many drinks you can safely have before reaching the legal driving limit of 0.08 in Washington.

But can you rely on these blood alcohol calculators to gauge how much you can drink?

While determining blood alcohol may be a general calculus that includes your body weight and how much you've drunk, there are a lot of individual factors that no calculator could possibly factor. For example, other important factors that a calculator would not consider include what you've eaten, your individual metabolism, and your tolerance to alcohol.

So while a blood alcohol calculator may say that you can safely consume two shots of vodka before driving, the reality is that you may be drunk even after only one shot.  And if you are ever arrested for driving under the influence in SeattleKirklandBellevue or anywhere in King County, telling the arresting officer that some website told you that you could safely have two is not a viable defense.

Blood alcohol calculators are fun to play around with. But don't use them or rely upon them when determining if it is safe to drink and drive.

If you do plan to drink this New Year's Eve, make sure you have some way of getting home without driving. Even a single drink can impact someone's driving ability.
