Man Arrested for DUI After Crashing Into 'Don't Drink and Drive' Sign

An Island County man was charged with a DUI after crashing into a "Please Don't Drink and Drive" sign near Freeland, reports Q13 Fox.

The accident happened over the summer as police pulled over Joe Clyde after crashing into the sign on Highway 525. Clyde was arrested and released. The very next day, officials spotted Clyde erratically driving a different car. He was pulled over again and tested for a blood alcohol level of 0.21 or well over two times the legal limit.

A search of Clyde's records revealed that the man had another drunk driving arrest in 2008. For the three DUIs, Island County prosecutors are now seeking a three-year prison sentence for the man.

While Joe Clyde crashing into the Don't Drink and Drive sign is ironic, his arrest gets to the heart of the current debate in Washington regarding drunk driving laws: What to do about repeat DUI offenders who blatantly ignore the law and continue to drink and drive.

Repeat DUI offenders already face more severe punishments for having multiple DUI arrests on their records. However, these penalties have proven not to deter certain drunk drivers who seemingly ignore all rules and get behind the wheels drunk anyway.

As a result, state lawmakers are proposing a variety of solutions from increased penalties to special driver's licenses to help stop this problem.
