Pet Parrot Turns In Drunk Driver

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Jan 15, 2014 | 0 Comments

Be careful what you teach your pet parrot to say.

In Mexico, Guillermo Reyes was driving his car when he was stopped at an alcohol checkpoint in Mexico City. The stop was a routine stop of random drivers at the checkpoint. However, what happened after the stop was anything but routine.

As the police questioned Reyes, a voice inside the car called out "He's drunk, he's drunk," reports Time Magazine. The police first thought that there was another drunk person inside the car ratting out his friend. Instead, the police found Reyes' pet parrot calling out his owner.

The police performed a closer examination of Reyes and determined that his parrot was right -- Reyes was in fact drunk. Reyes failed a sobriety test and he was arrested. Both Reyes and his parrot were taken into custody. Surprisingly, the Mexican officials were so afraid that the parrot would die if separated from his owner that they allowed Reyes to keep the parrot in the drunk tank. That may not have been the smartest move as the drunk driver may have harbored some anger towards the snitching parrot.

DUI Arrest in King County

In Washington State, you should know that DUI checkpoints are illegal. To make a legal DUI stop, police will need probable cause to stop you. This can include collecting evidence like erratic driving. It's unclear if a pet ratting you out would be enough to constitute probable cause. However, if you ever have a question about whether a DUI stop is legal, you will want to contact an experienced attorney.
