Pullman City Council Member Arrested for DUI, Again

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Aug 27, 2013 | 0 Comments

Pullman City Council member Derrick Skaug was arrested for suspicion of a DUI early Wednesday morning.

This is the second time that the 23-year-old council member has been arrested for a suspected DUI this year, reports KLEW TV.

Skaug was pulled over by Washington State University police at about 2:00 a.m. The council member was allegedly changing lanes illegally and driving with his high beams on. Skaug was given a Breathalyzer test and he reportedly tested under the legal limit. The police department did not report the exact reading, but Skaug reportedly said he blew a zero.

Skaug also submitted a blood test to determine if he was under the influence of any other substance. The results of the blood test could take weeks.

In the meantime, Pullman Mayor Glenn Johnson indicated that Skaug's position will not be changed, pending the results of the test. However, Skaug had already indicated that he will not run for reelection prior to this most recent arrest.

Individuals who are charged with a suspicion of drunk driving should know that they are innocent until proven guilty. Prosecutors may rely on different types of evidence to prove drunk driving including a breath test, field sobriety test, blood test, and signs of erratic driving.

However, individuals should know that bad driving or even erratic driving by itself may not be enough to support a drunk driving charge. This is especially true if you pass a breath and blood test.
