A website that alerts drivers of Washington State DUI emphasis patrols

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Apr 30, 2012 | 0 Comments

I have written at great length about the extensive efforts by law enforcement in Washington to curtail impaired driving. This includes the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and the Target Zero Team and the coordinated efforts of law enforcement in conducting DUI emphasis patrols (where officers from multiple agencies work together in a specific area on a given night to arrest drunk drivers). Their have been numerous news releases in the media detailing when and where these emphasis patrols will be working.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission created a website, watikileaks.com, which publishes a list of dates and locations where DUI Emphasis Patrols will be conducting business in King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties. Looking at the site now, you will see that there will be DUI patrols in downtown Snoqualmie this Friday. And this Friday and Saturday night their will be extra patrols throughout King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties for Cinco de Mayo Celebrations.

While some people may view this site as a means to exploit drunk driving by letting people know where they should not be driving on a certain night, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission states the main objective of the site is to "promote safe driving on a community level."

As a Seattle DUI attorney, I have had many clients who have been arrested during these specific DUI patrols. I have not witnessed a noticeable change in Washington State DUI arrests since the launch of the site back in September. I am uncertain as to whether many Washington driver's are even aware of this site. Even if an impaired driver stays far away from the location of a DUI emphasis patrol on a given night, they are still not immune to a DUI arrest. Law enforement throughout Washington regularly conduct traffic patrols on every major highway, city and town on every night.

I have to admit that I am impressed by the great efforts being taken by law enforcement to curtail impaired driving.
