Tougher Seattle DUI Laws Required - A Seattle DUI Lawyer Responds

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Oct 10, 2012 | 0 Comments

When it comes to highway safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has both good news and bad news to report. Although the number of total fatal traffic accidents in the United States reached an all-time low in 2011, we are still seeing too many drunk driving incidents.

According to the data, approximately one third of the traffic deaths in 2010 were alcohol-related. Furthermore, 70 percent of those deaths were caused by drivers with blood alcohol readings over twice the legal limit.

Some local DUI attorneys are arguing that tougher laws could help reduce the number of DUI accidents. Of course, as DUI lawyers, we are committed to seeing that every suspect gets a fair shake in court, but nevertheless, public safety must be our top priority.

In Washington State, and sixteen other states in the country, first-time DUI offenders are required to equip their cars with ignition interlock devices. Virginia is the most recent state to adopt the policy and it is considered to be amongst the most stringent in the nation.

The ignition interlock is extremely helpful, as are other recently-adapted laws, such as the revised implied consent law. For the safety-conscious DUI attorney, it's important to ensure that drivers' rights are upheld while, at the same time, individuals are dissuaded from engaging in potential fatal behaviors.

While news of declining DUI fatalities shows promise, we still have a long way to go. Always remember to use common sense when behind the wheel. Use a designated driver when necessary, and remember that even if you think you're basically okay, it's just not worth the risks.

And if you have already been charged with a DUI, don't try to fight the battle alone. Contact a qualified Seattle DUI lawyer to help level the playing field. At Wolff Criminal Defense, we specialize in DUI cases, and we are committed to our clients. Contact us today.
