Utah Drunk Driver Arrested for 3 DUIs in 3 Days

Repeat drunk driving offenders is dominating the news in Washington as state lawmakers debate proposed new laws following several tragic accidents.

As Washington lawmakers continue to hammer out what could be the toughest drunk driving laws in the country, it was reported that a Utah man was arrested for three separate drunk driving incidents on three consecutive days, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

In that case, the Utah man, 42-year-old Daniel Kropf, allegedly drove under the influence of opiates. He was first booked and taken to jail on July 8 of last year. After he was released, he was picked up again for the same charge on June 9. Then after he was released again, he was subsequently arrested for a third time on July 10 as he allegedly drove his black Cadillac Escalade under the influence of drugs.

For two of the three DUIs, Kropf was able to reach a plea deal of a six-month jail sentence. And because he will get credit for time served, he may be released in only 30 days. Needless to say, had this incident occurred in Washington, Kropf would likely face much stiffer penalties.

In Washington, someone with two prior DUI offenses faces a minimum 90-day jail term and you could possibly go to jail for up to one year. And given the public sentiment against repeat drunk drivers currently, it seems highly unlikely that a prosecutor would agree to such a favorable plea deal for someone charged with three DUIs in three days. This is especially true as lawmakers reportedly reached a tentative agreement on even tougher penalties and restrictions for repeat DUI offenders.

It is always important to work with an experienced DUI defense attorney. However, this is especially true now in Washington given the attention paid to DUI penalties and repeat DUI offenders.
