Where to Get an Ignition Interlock Device in Washington

Posted by Aaron J. Wolff | Jan 30, 2013 | 0 Comments

Washington Ignition Interlock Requirements

If you are convicted of a DUI in Washington and you wish to drive, you will be required to install an ignition interlock device. (RCW 46.20.720).

As you may know, an ignition interlock device is a device that is installed directly into your car. You will be required to blow into the device before starting the engine. If it detects alcohol on your breath, the device will "lock" you car and you will be prevented from driving.

Even after successfully operating your car, you may be asked to blow into the device at certain intervals to ensure that you are sober.

This year, Washington state lawmakers added an additional feature to ignition interlock law requiring that the devices come equipped with a camera. This ensures that the person blowing into the device is actually the person driving the car.

While ignition interlock devices can be very expensive, it's the price that some drivers will have to pay if they want to continue driving.

Where to Get Ignition Interlock Devices

While the State of Washington does not endorse a particular manufacturer or product, the state does certify certain models of ignition interlock devices as meeting the state's stringent and ever-changing requirements. So it's important to use a certified device.

To locate a certified ignition interlock installer in your area, you should call one of the ignition interlock manufacturers listed below, as provided by the state:

  • Guardian Interlock Systems – 1-800-499-0994
  • Draeger Safety Diagnostics Inc. – 1-800-977-0091
  • Smart Start Inc. – 1-800-880-3394
  • #1A LifeSafer of Washington Inc. – 1-800-325-2657
  • Consumer Safety Technology Inc. – 1-877-777-5020
